Many years ago, the city of Cartago, in the Republic of Costa Rica, was struck by an earthquake so violent that it almost completely destroyed the city.
The magazine "America," published by the Jesuits of New York, while describing the details of this terrible catastrophe, drew its readers' attention to the following incident:
Don Ezequiel Gutiérrez, who had served as President of the Republic, was at home when the earthquake struck, praying the Rosary together with his entire family.
Some people wanted to interrupt the prayer and flee into the streets, but the head of the household insisted that everyone remain until the Rosary had been completed.
When the prayer ended, they went outside.
To their astonishment, they found the surrounding houses reduced to ruins.
Throughout the entire neighborhood, not a single building remained intact. The devastation was complete.
Only the former president's house had suffered no damage whatsoever—not even the slightest tremor.
It was evident that Our Lady had placed it under her special protection, for within that home her Holy Rosary was faithfully prayed.
