THIS BOY WILL BE A PRIEST

What we are about to relate is an episode from the life of Saint John Bosco.

One day, Countess D. Z. went to him to ask him to bless her four little children. Don Bosco, always kind and a friend of children, gave them a powerful blessing with great affection.

The countess, who had also knelt, rose convinced that the blessing of that priest, whom she considered a saint, would bring abundant graces from God upon the whole family.

Then, embracing her children and knowing, as was widely believed, that Don Bosco could foresee the future, she asked him:

— Don Bosco, what will become of my children?

Don Bosco, with a light tone, spoke of each one, beginning with the eldest, predicting good things for all. When he came to the youngest, he placed his hand upon his head, looking at him with particular attention.

— What will become of this one, Don Bosco?

— As for this last one, Countess, I do not know if you will be pleased...

— Tell me then what you think.

— Well! I say that he will be an excellent priest.

At these words, the scene suddenly changed. The noble lady turned pale, clutched the child to herself as if to save him from a misfortune, and beside herself exclaimed:

— My son a priest?… I would rather ask God to take his life!

Don Bosco, who held the priesthood in the highest esteem, was deeply hurt by these words and, rising sorrowfully, dismissed the countess.

A few months later, the countess D. Z.’s youngest son was taken from her by a sudden illness.
