MARTYR BOYS

The event we are about to recount took place in Russia, in the worst days of communism, which has been sweeping all religions—especially the Catholic religion—from its territory.

In a village near Petrograd, there was an orphanage with a Catholic chapel. The Reds (communists) closed the house, claiming there were no resources to maintain it, and expelled the chaplain.

Those wicked soldiers conceived the sinister idea of turning the chapel into a dance hall, and since it was closed, they decided to break down the door and profane what was inside.

They made this decision in a tavern, where, by chance, three Catholic boys overheard the conversation.

Understanding that it was a matter of profaning the house of God, they immediately resolved to defend it as best they could.

At night, the three boys and some of their companions entered the church through a window and stood guard near the altar.

The soldiers, having broken down the door and entered the chapel, ordered the boys to leave immediately. None, however, moved or left his place.

The perverse communists then fired and killed two of the boys. They then tried to drag the others outside, but the boys preferred to die rather than cease protecting the house of God with their bodies.

Even more enraged, the communists fired again, and the blood of those innocents flowed down the steps of the holy altar.

The mother of one of them, taking her dying son into her arms, asked him:

“My son, what have you done?”

“We defended Jesus,” he replied, “and the wicked did not dare to touch Him.”
