Father Mateo, apostle of devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, recounts that while he was in England during a time of great cold, he was preparing a group of children aged six to nine for their First Communion.
“Tell your mothers that I am preaching the Kingdom of the Sacred Heart and that you must be its missionaries.”
After I finished preaching, a little girl came up to me and said:
“Father, my father never comes to church. I will tell my mother what you told us, and I will never miss Mass.”
I had preached to them about the Heart of Jesus and asked them to help me save souls by attending one or more Masses.
When the girl arrived home, she told her mother that every day she would attend Mass for her father.
“In the morning it is very cold, my little daughter.”
“That doesn’t matter, Mommy. I need to make some sacrifice to save my daddy’s soul.”
“Well then, do as you wish.”
Three months later I met the same girl again.
“Father,” she said, “since then I haven’t missed a single Mass. Sometimes it was very cold, and I was very sleepy because Mass is so early… but do you know what I tell Jesus in my heart? I tell Him that I will attend Mass and receive Communion every morning for my daddy, to pay the ransom for him, to take his place before the Most Blessed Sacrament, so that He may save his soul. That is why I am here at the holy table, my good Jesus.”
Admirable child! I do not know whether Jesus granted her requests; but there is no doubt that He will do so in His time.
The good Jesus cannot remain deaf to such prayers. Referring to a child, a poet says:
The prayers from your lips
can do so much!… the little ones
know divine secrets…
They speak very often with God
