For years, Jesus lived in Nazareth, a small town in Galilee. He helped Saint Joseph, the holy carpenter, and the Most Blessed Virgin Mary with their household chores. For more than thirty years, that poor little house was sanctified by the most sublime virtues.
Many years later, the Turks conquered Nazareth and, in their excessive fanaticism, destroyed the great church that the Christians had built and which covered the very site of the house where the Child Jesus had lived.
It happened, however, that one starry night, the angels took that little house and, flying through the air, carried it to the vicinity of Fiume, in Italy. But since there were many thieves in that area who robbed travelers, the angels soon carried it away again and set it down in the middle of a laurel grove. It was because of these laurels that the little house came to be called “the Holy House of Loreto.”
At the center of the altar stands a miraculous image of the Mother of God, and aviators have taken Our Lady of Loreto as their advocate and patroness.
