LAST HAIL MARY, LAST BREATH!

In a home for the elderly lived a former soldier who, despite his life in barracks and military camps, remained gentle and receptive to religious truths.

A priest who visited him frequently spoke to him about devotion to the Rosary and taught him how to pray it.

A sister gave him a rosary, and the old soldier found such great consolation in praying it that he deeply regretted not having known it sooner, saying that he would have prayed it every day.

— Sister, he asked one day, how many days are there in sixty years?

The sister worked out the calculation and replied:

— 21,900 days.

— Sister, how many rosaries would I have to pray each day to reach that number in three years?

— Twenty a day, the sister told him.

From that day onward, he could be seen, day and night, with his rosary in his hands.

After three years of suffering, borne with great patience, he came to his final rosary.

Death awaited him there, for he did not live even one day or one hour longer. As he finished the last Hail Mary, he breathed his last and surrendered his soul to God.
