We live in challenging times, where many cry out for profound changes in Brazil, in politics, and in society. It is common to hear that we need more upright leaders, fairer laws, and more harmonious coexistence among citizens. However, I invite you to reflect on a crucial question: how can we demand transformation in the world if, in our daily choices, we do not demonstrate coherence with the values of the Gospel?
Let us consider, for example, the habit of watching reality shows. These programs often promote behaviors that are contrary to human dignity: they showcase intrigue, disrespect, vulgarity, and an incessant pursuit of fame and money, as if these were the highest goals in life. Instead of elevating human thought, these shows reinforce existential emptiness, drawing us away from the pursuit of what is true, beautiful, and good.
Catholic doctrine teaches us that we are called to be "the salt of the earth and the light of the world." This means that our life must radiate the values of Christ in all areas: in the family, at work, in politics, and even in leisure. The time we spend in front of a screen consuming empty content is time that could be dedicated to prayer, studying the Word of God, charity, or uplifting fellowship with our brothers and sisters.
When we watch programs that exalt sin and mediocrity, we run the risk of becoming complicit in a culture that dehumanizes others. More than that, we become hypocrites when we demand change in the world while refusing to change our own habits. How can we ask for ethical and committed leaders if we are not capable of renouncing entertainment that promotes the opposite?
Our role as Christians is to seek holiness in every area of life. This includes making choices that contribute to the common good and to our own spiritual edification. Instead of consuming content that distances us from God, we can invest our time in activities that bring us closer to Him and to others. Reading a good book, deepening our knowledge of Catholic doctrine, participating in prayer groups, or volunteering in charitable works are just some of the ways to cultivate a heart turned toward heaven.
True change in Brazil and in the world begins with each of us. If we want a more just country and more honest politics, we must be citizens who live according to Christian principles. This requires renunciation, effort, and above all, coherence. It is not easy, but it is necessary.
Let us ask God for the grace to be authentic Christians, willing to witness the Gospel with courage and joy. May our actions be a reflection of our faith, so that we may transform the world, beginning with the transformation of ourselves.
