BREAD OF THE STRONG

In the Crimean War, a French colonel receives the order to seize a small fort. Without hesitating for an instant, he advances at the head of his regiment, which was likewise electrified at the sight of such courage. Calm and impassive amid machine guns and bayonets, as if he were at a military parade, he storms the enemy battery, fiercely defended by the Russians.

His general, amazed at such prodigious calm, exclaims before the General Staff:

— Colonel, what cold blood! Where did you learn such calm in the midst of so great a danger?

— My General, replies the colonel with all simplicity, it is because I received Holy Communion this morning.

Honor to the valiant and Christian colonel — valiant precisely because he is Christian; and Christian not among those who are ashamed of their faith or content themselves with Easter Communion, but among the fervent who know how to nourish themselves frequently with the Bread of the strong, especially in the difficult circumstances of life.
