How often do we hear complaints about the direction of Brazil, politics, and society! Many cry out for justice, honesty, and a change of mentality in our country. However, each of us must examine our own conscience: how can we demand that the world change if our daily choices do not reflect the values of the Gospel?
A clear example of this is the type of music we choose to listen to. Unfortunately, many popular songs today promote unchecked sensuality, immorality, vulgarity, and even the glorification of sin. These songs not only offend Christian values but also disfigure human dignity, reducing it to a mere object of pleasure or consumption.
Catholic doctrine teaches us that man is called to seek what is true, good, and beautiful. Saint Augustine said that “music should lift the soul to God.” But what happens when we allow ourselves to be influenced by songs that exalt behavior contrary to Christian morality? Our hearts drift away from purity and virtue, and our thoughts are shaped by messages that trivialize sin.
It is important to understand that music is not neutral. What we listen to repeatedly has the power to form or deform our mentality. When we feed our ears and hearts with music that promotes selfishness, sensuality, and violence, we are allowing these ideas to take root in our lives. Even worse, we become hypocrites when we demand just leaders and policies while neglecting our own moral consistency.
As Christians, we are called to be light in the world. This means making choices that build us up and edify others. Choosing music that respects human dignity, promotes noble values, and points toward the transcendent is a concrete way to witness to our faith.
Furthermore, we must remember that listening to immoral music is not just a personal issue, but also a social one. When we give an audience to these songs, we contribute to the perpetuation of a culture that devalues what is sacred and promotes sin as something normal. On the other hand, when we reject such music and choose what uplifts, we help build a healthier society that reflects the values of the Kingdom of God.
If we truly want to see real change in Brazil and in the world, we must begin with the conversion of our hearts. This includes an honest examination of our choices and a firm decision to live according to the principles of the Gospel. The time we spend listening to immoral music can be redirected to hymns, liturgical chants, or music that lifts the soul to God and inspires virtue.
Let us ask for the grace to be coherent in our faith and to witness, in every area of life, the call to holiness. May the Blessed Virgin Mary, model of purity and fidelity, intercede for us so that we may be authentic Christians, committed to building a truly better world.
